Maintain Oxygen Level
Less Than 0.01%
Oxy-Guard™ oxygen scavenging packets, also known as oxygen absorbers are a method of active packaging. Clariant''s oxygen absorbers aid in maintaining freshness in packaged foods such as pet treats, processed and dried meats, meals ready to eat (MRE''s), packaged coffee and teas.
Shelf life of packaged foods is also prolonged by avoiding food degradation due to oxygen that can lead to the growth of microorganisms. Foods with unsaturated fats and oils also benefit due to their high susceptibility to oxidation.
A variety of sizes are available as either individual packets, or for automatic insertion, Oxy-Guard™ oxygen scavengers are also available as a continuous strip. Also available, Oxy-Guard™ Case-Ready Meat oxygen absorbers ensure fast removal of oxygen in moist refrigerated conditions.
Benefits:
High capacity for oxygen absorption
Maintain oxygen level of less than 0.1% inside a sealed the package during the intended shelf life
Help maintain taste, texture and freshness while preventing the conditions that may cause mould, microbial growth and rancidity in packaged foods
Oxygen absorbers minimize the need for preservatives
Purpose Oxy-Guard™ packets maintain taste, texture and freshness while helping prevent the conditions that may cause mould, microbial growth and rancidity in packaged foods.
What are they A method of active packaging, Oxy-Guard™ oxygen scavenging packets, also known as oxygen absorbers, absorb available oxygen inside food packaging to prolong shelf life, maintain product quality and reduce food waste.
Why use them Oxygen is the primary pathway to food degradation, which affects flavour, colour, smell and texture, as well as deteriorating vitamin and nutritional value. Aerobic microorganisms - such as bacteria, mould and fungi - require oxygen to form and thrive, which ultimately spoils food. The unsaturated fats and oils in food are highly susceptible to oxidation which leads to flavour-loss and undesirable odours.
Antioxidant preservatives are often added to food products to inhibit oxidation. Consumers, however, are demanding more organic, preservative-free foods, thus driving the need to address oxidation in the packaging rather than chemically within the food itself.
Clariant''s Oxy-Guard™ packets have a high capacity for oxygen absorption. Oxy-Guard can maintain an oxygen level of less than 0.01% inside a sealed package during the intended shelf life. This level is reached within 24 hours at normal temperature.
Typical applications include
Baked goods, bread, tortillas
Nuts
Dried Grains
Pasta, beans and rice
Processed and dried meats
Coffee and tea
Chocolates and confectionary
Available Configurations Clariant offers a variety of sizes based on the size of the package and the residual air inside. Oxy-Guard™ is available as either individual packets or as a continuous strip for automatic insertion.
